São Luís do Maranhão

The French built a fort here on the Atlantic coast in 1612 and named the place Saint Louis in honor of their king Louis XIII. However, the settlement was conquered by the Portuguese as early as 1615 and over the following centuries a town developed entirely in the style of the Portuguese architectural tradition. Today, the historic center of the city is a colonial gem and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.
